I used to do a lot of open water swimming back in the UK, before Covid, when I was younger and fitter! I haven't done any for at least five years, and I've only just got back into the pool - where I am swimming like a brick. So I thought it would be a good idea to swim 2km (3km if I can stop sinking) in a lake, or ocean (location tbd) this September, to raise money for Light the Night. Those who know me, know I have lost loved ones to cancer, and I would like to do something here in my adopted country to support this very important cause. I will post updates to let you know how my training is going and how my dodgy shoulder is holding out. All you need to do is support me and this great organisation, and all they do.
UPDATE: Swim training is going really well and I'm already up to 2km lake swims - thanks to some great training partners. So I'm aiming for a 3km swim, probably in Porter's Lake and probably around the end of August, early September (before the water temp plunges). I swim "skins" i.e. I don't wear a wetsuit - just my swimsuit. So water temperature is "meaningful".
Light The Night is a special evening where communities across Canada come together to honour those we've lost, celebrate survivors, and show support for everyone affected by blood cancers. It’s a time filled with remembrance, love, and hope—a reminder that no one goes through this alone.
Blood cancers are the fifth most common cancer in Canada, impacting over 155,000 Canadians, including our family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. I’m taking the first step to show my support, and I’d love for you to join me. Together, we can shine a light toward a future without blood cancers.
