On March 20th 2020 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the young age of 21 years old. In the height of COVID-19 I was admitted to Kingston General Hospital to undergo many chemo treatments and procedures for 43 days. The months following I struggles with more treatments as well as infections and on August 21st 2020 I underwent a Stem Cell Transplant in Ottawa where I stayed for 100 days to recover.
My experience with cancer was quite traumatic as many other fellow cancer patients/ survivors can attest to. When I needed strength, support or positivity I could always depend on my family, friends and community to stand behind me and encourage me to keep fighting. My cancer journey opened my eyes to the realities of blood cancer and the amount of people who struggle through different journeys.
I also lost a close friend of mine, Michael Patterson who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma during my journey as well. Michael was only 18 when he was diagnosed with blood cancer and we became close friends and supporters on our floor at KGH. Michael passed away June 19th 2020 after a hard battle and he will always be remembered as a true fighter in his journey.
Shae Shining Star’s will be walking to support LLS and this amazing , beautiful event that raises money and awareness for those who are impacted by blood cancer.
Any support is greatly appreciated!
