For 6 years now our family has been celebrating Light with Emily’s Entourage raising over $103,000 so that we can build a future where no child or family has to endure what ours had to.
In fall 2014, Emily was planning to look out her hospital room window to see the lanterns of Light The Night and instead she had her first dose of chemotherapy that day and was too sick to participate and watch the show of lights. That was the beginning of more than two years of gruelling rounds of treatment for lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
Emily is now 11 and her cancer is in remission. But years of treatment have taken a toll on her and there’s a little bit of fear that you live with for the rest of your life. The emotional, physical and cognitive effects of cancer treatment can impact kids for years, even the rest of their lives.
This year we have learned that Canadians are not prioritizing their cancer screening and as a result we are expecting a higher rate of later stage diagnosis. We are also learning that as a result in the disruption of research that there will be fewer treatment options that will contribute to an expected 20% increase in cancer related deaths.
We cannot underscore the importance of timely diagnosis and investing in a better future of treatment options.
Scientists are now asking themselves ‘what’s the cost of cure?’ and ‘Can we peel back some of this chemotherapy or use more targeted agents to get the same success rate without some of the long-term side effects?’
Thanks to your support last year LLSC was able to fund $4.6M of life saving research and support to people impacted by blood cancer.
But we still have so much more work to do! Please support Emily’s Entourage. And join us on October 23rd for a short walk in our neighbourhood in-advance of the National broadcast.
