The first funeral I ever went to was for Tara Beck, a 10 year old girl I went to school and Girl Guides with that was diagnosed with Leukemia. I remember her energy and laugh, and kindness. Following her diagnosis, I remember her loosing weight, loosing her hair and sadly loosing her battle. I remember her best friend (they were inseparable) giving a heart wrenching speech at the funeral and trying to understand what had happened and how/why. That was in 1993. Seven years later, I also lost my Grandmother to Lymphoma and while she was in her early 80's, was in great health otherwise.
More recently, a colleague in her early 20's was diagnosed earlier this year. She is currently fighting her battle and thankfully, due to the great work done by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society over the years, Kate's survival rates are much better than sweet Tara's were.
Light The Night brings communities across Canada together for one magical evening to share stories, remember loved ones lost and pay tribute to our heroes, bringing light, love and hope to dispel the darkness of blood cancers.
I am taking the first step and showing my support. I hope you do too!
