My names Rachael Hammersley, and on February 9th, 2024, I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia at the age of 23. My world was completely turned upside down. I went from working full time and hanging out with friends and family, to being stuck in a hospital bed receiving treatment. After 6 months of chemotherapy and many hospital visits, I can happily say that I am in remission!
I would like to thank all my nurses and doctors on 8A/8BMT at Victoria General Hospital for all their hard work and support over the months that I was in the hospital, but most importantly my family and friends who stood by me everyday through this horrible journey. My journey would have looked extremely different without my support system.
I am thrilled to be able to participate in my first Light the Night walk, especially as a survivor! Being able to help spread awareness and raise money for research for leukemia and lymphoma has become very important to me. Throughout my time receiving treatment, I realized the importance of advocating for yourself and taking matters into my own hands when necessary, and I hope that sharing my story and spreading awareness can help others like me!
Light the Night brings communities across Canada together for one magical evening to share stories, remember loved ones lost and pay tribute to our heroes, bringing light, love and hope to dispel the darkness of blood cancers.
I am taking the first step and showing my support. If you can, please consider donating to the Light the Night community to help improve research and treatment methods for people with blood cancer! Any amount big or small makes a huge impact on this cause. If you are unable to donate, please consider donating blood or platelets to a donation centre by you as you could truly be saving a life.
